Chalmers Lodge in Vancouver

We provided mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and security engineering services for this supportive housing project in Vancouver, Canada.

This project involved upgrading and renewing a building that was previously used as a community-care facility for BC Housing, the provincial government agency responsible for subsidized housing.

Chalmers Lodge is a former assisted living residence for seniors built in 1968. It has remained mostly in its original form, apart from some amenity upgrades and washrooms. The gross livable area is approximately 56,600 square feet, and there is a single parkade level below grade.

The 12-story building has many features that make it ideal for supportive housing. These include:

  • 114 studio suites with private bathrooms
  • Several lounge areas
  • A central dining room
  • A commercial kitchen
  • Office space for staff

Its location in central Vancouver means that residents have good access to transit, healthcare, shopping, and other amenities. BC Housing is giving preference to seniors who are already its tenants but wish to move into a more seniors-focused building. It will also give priority to Indigenous people, women, and other equity-denied groups.

There will be a wide range of supports for residents including daily meals, life and employment skills training, plus connections to healthcare and other community services.

Chalmers Lodge will provide new replacement homes for people in single-room occupancy (SRO) buildings in Vancouver and those living outside in the Downtown Eastside.

As part of a separate arrangement with the BC government, senior residents who lived in the Lodge’s previous incarnation as a care home have already been relocated to Burnaby.
