Sustainability and Collaboration: The RSS Main Hub Project
The Regulatory and Security Sciences (RSS) Main Hub represents an ambitious effort to unite multiple Canadian Government organizations into a cutting-edge, sustainable laboratory complex. Situated on a 20-hectare site within Ottawa's National Capital Greenbelt, the 396,000 sq ft facility will accommodate high-containment CL3 and CL2 laboratories, plant and animal holding spaces, and advanced support areas for 483 staff. The project's complexity is heightened by the integration of four Science-Based Departments and Agencies (SBDAs), requiring alignment of diverse operational needs, sustainable design standards, and stringent regulatory compliance.
Introba provided electrical and mechanical engineering expertise for this sophisticated facility, aligning with its vision for zero-carbon performance and global leadership in sustainable laboratory practices. Designed to meet LEED and WELL standards, the facility incorporates a geothermal energy system, high-efficiency building systems, and cutting-edge mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Key features include advanced containment systems, an effluent treatment plant, and energy-efficient vertical riser modules for HVAC systems. These elements not only meet rigorous safety and operational requirements but also support the broader Labs Canada initiative to modernize scientific infrastructure across the country.
Our approach integrates technical excellence with a deep commitment to sustainability and collaboration. By addressing the project's unique needs—ranging from supporting high-containment laboratory environments to enabling efficient site-wide operations—we have helped position the RSS Main Hub as a model for the future of federal scientific infrastructure. With work set to begin in late 2024, the facility's phased construction will eventually transform the site into a vibrant hub of innovation, supporting human, animal, and plant health research while enhancing emergency preparedness and border security. Our tailored solutions underscore our role in creating spaces where science and sustainability thrive together.
