W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre

We are providing energy modeling, electrical and mechanical engineering, and sustainability consulting services for this community-focused project in Ontario, Canada.
We are part of the team at the WJ Henderson Recreation Centre in Loyalist, Ontario, which is currently undergoing a renovation and expansion of its existing facilities.
The expansion encompasses the addition of a state-of-the-art aquatic facility, featuring an eight-lane, 25-meter pool, as well as a leisure pool. There will also be a dedicated viewing area and storage rooms, along with essential mechanical components. The renovation aspect of the project has several critical elements:
-
Converting the existing pool area into a functional space
-
Replacing the arena's ice pad, boards, and glass
-
Modernizing and enhancing the arena's changing rooms
-
Revitalizing offices, staff rooms, work areas, meeting rooms, and the canteen
A new central reception area will serve as a focal point for the entire facility. An elevator will significantly improve accessibility, and any outdated mechanical components will also be replaced during this phase.
Sustainability targets include achieving a minimum energy savings of 35%, a reduction in gas consumption, and a 39% reduction in energy usage compared with the current building standards. A substantial reduction of 207.3 tonnes of CO₂ emissions is also being aimed for. The facility will be designed to be Net Zero Ready.
Low-grade rejected heat will be used to feed a new heating coil inside the Zamboni snow melt pit, eliminating the current practice of operators manually melting ice by using hot water from a hose after each ice resurfacing event.
