Berkeley Mental Health Services Building
In line with the City of Berkeley’s commitment to environmentally responsible design, the design team targeted Net Zero Energy operation for the seismic retrofit and remodeled this existing wood-framed building.
The project is a demonstration site for a study by Berkeley Lab and Cal Energy to develop state-wide standards for NZE retrofits of small commercial buildings. In addition to leading the MEP design, Introba (formerly Integral Group) designed signage to educate occupants about the building’s NZE features.
The project team minimized modifications to the building façades. Insulation was added for improved thermal performance, and a supplemental roof structure was added to support the new mechanical units and photovoltaic panels. Solatube daylighting devices allow daylight into the occupied spaces to increase energy efficiency and improve occupant experience and health.
The 1925 building was gutted and reprogrammed, except for the historic chapel. The building was the home of Rainbow Sign, Berkeley’s Black Cultural Arts Center, from 1971 to 1977. Berkeley Mental Health Services provides mental health and associated social services to adults in Berkeley, including those among the homeless population.
