The University College School in Hampstead is an independent school with a history of excellence stretching back to 1830.

This project entailed the construction of new art, design, and technology block and linked modern language blocks, both built in a contemporary style with high levels of natural light and ventilation.

Introba (formerly Elementa Consulting) delivered mechanical and electrical engineering design services and energy and sustainability strategies. At the project’s outset, Introba conducted workshops with user groups and the project team to define the scope of work and fully understand the client’s vision for the new facilities.

We worked closely with the design team, conducting detailed thermal modeling to engineer the building design, including fabric, solar shading, glazing, fenestration, and ventilation strategy. The result was an almost entirely naturally ventilated building with increased future flexibility and significant savings in construction costs.

These cost savings were made from a reduction in the slab thickness, modifications to the internal flank walls, and a reduction in the need for mechanical ventilation. Features include Part L compliant low energy scheme and natural ventilation achieved through window design/ventilation concept.
