The new grandstand at Simon Fraser University on a sunny day with clear blue skies.

We provided mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection services for the sports event grandstand at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC, Canada.

The 20,681 sq ft Simon Fraser University (SFU) grandstand, which overlooks Terry Fox Field, also houses a football locker room and a press box. The building is a formal gathering area during sporting events and replaces the hill that spectators would previously sit on. The grandstand gives the complex a more professional feel and improves SFU's reputation as a result when visitors come to watch sports.

Our team worked closely with Perkins&Will to deliver this project. One challenge was to provide adequate duct connections to the roof for equipment on the lower floors. In addition to the equipment in the base building contract, we also had to account for the locker room that requires high volumes of air.

We worked closely with the architect and structural engineers to provide a pair of thin shafts on either side of the building that was sufficient for building exhaust while not compromising the size of the adjacent spaces. Additionally, clean air was pulled from different areas to reduce the services we needed in the shafts.
